Interview with Peter Liepa on 8-bit Crisis

Hi there, I think this has not been mentioned in this forum yet: End of last year there was a half hour interview with Peter Liepa on the retro podcast 8-bit Crisis. I found it very interesting and worth listening to, even though I already knew a lot of the things that Peter Liepa told. Also nice to...

Re: Videos - Boulder Dash for Experts

I just watched the whole video. I like it. A great idea and well executed! I remember some of the intermissions. Seems Dustin has become the Boulder Dash historian! (Or at least one of the main Boulder Dash historians.)

Re: Personal experience with fangames

Hi Dustin, thanks for writing these summaries about a big number of fan games. It was interesting to read! Your characterization of Brain Delicacy fits my intention very well. Actually, I am not sure if the caves in Brain Delicacy are still considered maximum difficulty when using the standards set ...

Thank you, Dustin, for this information about the movement algorithm! Maybe I will try to play around with biters in CLCK somewhen in the future.

Biters

Biters have been introduced in fan games early on (I guess in the 80s by Prof. Knibble?). They can also be used in the Crazy Light Construction Set. I am a bit puzzled by them, as their behavior always seemed rather unpredictable to me. Can someone help me? 1. What is the algorithm by which they mov...

Now I have watched both videos from beginning to end. It's really great someone finally put longplays with all caves online.

Also, great achievement, considering this is all "live" without savestates! Something different than those polished tool-assisted longplays.

Dustin wrote:That's true! As for Dustin's BD 11, it will be hard to find a way to force the player to create a formation with only classical elements, i.e. no dolls.
It could for instance be necessary to launch such formations to send flies to an island (or several islands) in the middle of the cave.

Dr Guru, what do You say about joining the Krissz's site? :) Hi Shredder, I'm currently not planning to join. Lack of time being one reason. Also I guess I would have to undergo some serious reflex training to reach the crazy skills needed for most of the interesting caves. If you know my game Brai...

As a sidenote:

Mathematically speaking, Boulder Dash is a cellular automaton.

Another famous cellular automaton is Conway's Game of Life. A search on Wikipedia or Youtube for Conway's Game of Life shows that it also facilitates many different autonomously moving configurations, e.g. the gliders.

I think Interstellar Ship is a really nice cave with many different ideas packed into very small space! The first 20 seconds must be extremely hard to play (I don't think I could do that).

Sabotage in the BGDB

Seems someone (or somebot?) sabotaged the Boulder Dash Game Data Base by assigning random very low scores to many Fan Games:
Arno Dash 21 => 1 point
The Lost Caves 09 => 1 point
Brain Delicacy => 4 points
Crazy Dream 10 => 1 point
...and so on...

...what the heck?
